In this straightforward guide, I’ll walk you through the process of setting up email notifications to keep you informed when your server becomes unreachable or goes offline. While SMS notifications are an option, they typically come with a fee.

For this tutorial, I will be utilizing HetrixTools, a service I highly recommend.

Step 1: Create Your HetrixTools Account

To get started, navigate to the HetrixTools website and create an account if you haven't done so already.

Step 2: Access Uptime Monitors

Once you are logged into your account, head to the main menu and select Tools, then click on Uptime Monitors.

Next, look for the button labeled Add Monitor to set up a new server check.

Step 3: Configure Your Monitor

A new window will appear. For the monitor type, choose Ping/Service Monitor from the options provided. Next, complete the form as follows:

Monitor Configuration

In the "Monitor from" section, you’ll need to select four different locations that will ping your server. It’s best to pick locations based on the continent where your server is hosted. For instance, if your server is located in France, you might choose the following four locations:

Select Locations

After selecting your locations, expand the Advanced Settings and adjust the "Number of tries" to either 1 or 2. Finally, click on Add Monitor to complete the setup.

Conclusion

With these steps, you’ll be effectively monitoring your server’s status and be promptly notified if any issues arise. This setup not only helps you maintain server uptime but also allows you to take action quickly when necessary.
